NCAT JAZZ COMBO at ColtraneJazzFest.com
We are lucky to have North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University, the country’s largest HBCU (Historically Black Colleges and Universities), right in our backyard. And, we are excited to welcome the N.C. A&T Jazz Combo to the Saturday line up of the John Coltrane International Jazz and Blues Festival. The Combo is a component of the University’s Jazz Ensemble. They will perform Saturday, Aug. 31st at Oak Hollow Park, High Point, NC.
The University Jazz Combo is the “fast attack” unit of the Jazz Ensemble. This group is comprised of highly skilled musicians who are good readers, improvisers and overall performers. Because events are often booked with short notice, these musicians can learn music quickly and/or sight read music during performance and still produce a professional sound. This group is smaller, usually made up of five to seven musicians, all of whom must be members of the big band in order to participate in the jazz combo. Music they perform includes various forms of jazz, including swing, bebop, cool jazz, hard bop, jazz fusion, contemporary and modern jazz.
Members of the Combo who will perform at the festival are:
- Ryan Long on saxophone
- Cole Brown, trumpet
- Marisha Brown, bass
- Collin Semien, piano/keyboards
- Zayvion Davis, drums
- Eden Howard, vocals.
